If you're trying to lose weight but can't find time for the gym, take a look at your staircase.
First, an honest note: weight loss mostly comes from steady habits over time, including what you eat, how you sleep, and how much you move. No single workout does it alone. But short, focused sessions are an easy way to add more movement on busy days, and stair intervals get your heart rate up quickly with no equipment.
Try this: stair intervals
Warm up (about 2 minutes): Walk up and down the stairs twice at an easy pace, holding the rail. Then march in place for 30 seconds.
The intervals:
- Walk up the flight briskly, one step at a time, holding the rail lightly. Plant your whole foot on each step and push through your heel.
- At the top, turn around and walk down slowly and carefully, holding the rail. The trip down is your recovery.
- That's one round. Start the next round when you reach the bottom, or take a short breather if you need one.
Sets and reps: Start with 6 rounds, resting for a minute after round 3 if you need to. Over a few weeks, build up to 10 to 12 rounds. Aim for 2 or 3 sessions a week.
How hard should it feel? Use the talk test. On the way up, you should be breathing harder but still able to say a short sentence. If you can't speak at all, slow down.
Cool down: Finish with 2 easy rounds and a minute of walking around the house.
Make it count more: Pair stair intervals with 2 days of strength training each week, such as rows and split squats. Lifting while you lose weight helps you hold on to muscle.
Safety note: Always hold the rail, keep the stairs clear, wear shoes with good grip, and make sure the stairway is well lit. Walk, don't run, and never skip steps on the way down. Stop if you feel pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, or unusual shortness of breath. If you have a heart or lung condition, or have had an injury or surgery, check with your doctor or physical therapist first. I'm a NASM-certified personal trainer, not a physician or physical therapist, so this is general fitness information, not medical advice.
